This article is the first part of a three‐part article on the operation and maintenance of filtration systems. This part focuses on backwashing as a means of keeping filters in top shape. When to backwash, how to backwash, low‐flow backwashing, and high‐flow backwashing are discussed. Problems to be watched out for in the backwash process, such as backwash rate, and air release are also presented.
