Effect of Post-emergence Herbicides on Weed Control in Potato

Abstract

A field experiment to study the effect of post-emergence herbicides in potato (Solunum tuberosum L.) was conducted during the rabi seasons of 1995–96 and 1996–97 at Research Farm, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. The field was mainly infested with broad leaf weeds, namely, Chenopodium album (50%), Melilotus alba (35%) and Coronopus didymus (15%). Among various herbicide treatments linuron+metribuzin (2: 1) at 1.0–1.5 kg/ha and metribuzin at 0.55 kg/ha provided acceptable control of all the weeds (83–97%) and resulted in tuber yields statistically at par with weed free treatment during both the years. Atrazine and glufosinate were not much effective, whereas linuron at 0.75–1.0 kg/ha was more effective (88–93%) only during 1995–96. Combination of linuron+atrazine could not perform well as compared to linuron+metribuzin at respective doses. Uncontrolled weeds reduced the tuber yield by 69 and 81% during 1995–96 and 1996c97, respectively.
