Abstract

4 nitro-2,4-dichloro diphenyl ether (nitrofen), N-methoxy-methyl. L chloro acet-o2, 6-diethyl anilide (alachlor), 3, 4-dichloro benzyl carbamate and 2, 3-dichlorobenzyl methyl carbamate (dichlorormte), 4-amino-6-butyl-3-(methylthio)-as triazine-5-(44)-one (metribuzin), 3-(3-4-dischlorophenyl)-l-methoxy-1-methyrylurea (linuron), 3, 4-dichloropropi-onanilide (propanil), 1, 1-dimethyl-4, 4-bipridilium dischloride (Paraquat) and N (2-Chloroethyl) 2, 6-dinitro-n-trifluomethyl-aniline (fluchloralin) herbicides along with weedy and weed free check were evaluated for dry matter produced by the weeds species and tuber yield on sandy loam soil at Horticultural Research Centre at Patharehatta, Pantnagar. Pre-emergence application of nitrofen, alachlor, dichlormate, metribuzin linuron and post-emergence application of paraquat were effective in reducing the population and dry matter of annual weeds and increase the tuber yield of potatoes. Pre-plant incorporation of fluchloralin, though controlled weeds effectively but had harmful effect on tuber yield. Giving only one weeding + earthing did not help in controlling weeds and reduced crop yield heavily. Post errergence application (5,per cent emergence of potato plants) of paraquat at the rate 0.5 kg/ha was most effective in reducing dry matter and population of weeds and increasing the yield of tubers. This was followed by metribuzin and nitrofen at 1.0. kg/ha. Application of fluchlorolin reduced crop yield.
