Abstract

The effect of varying levels of nitrogen was studied in Thompson Seedless and Kandhari varieties of grape during 1967 and 1968. Four levels of nitrogen i.e. 250, 500, 750 and 1000 g/vine per year were tried. The dose of P and K were kept constant. Nitrogen at the rate of 1 kg per vine gave the highest vine girth and fruit yield. Vines in their second year of bearing gave an average bunch number of 39.25 and 51.0 and a total yield of 8.22 and 15.58 kg/vine in Thompson Seedless and Kandhari varieties respectively. Larger bunches and berry size were derived with higher nitrogen levels. There was, however, a slight decrease in T.S.S. and increase in acidity with higher nitrogen. This treatment also resulted in early maturity of both varieties. With increasing levels of nitrogen, there was also increase in the nitrogen content of the leaf petiole.
