Abstract
The results of investigations on the adsorption of cesium-137 by sparingly soluble metal hydroxides as a functon of the pH of the solution were cited. It was established that the adsorption of cesium depends on the nature of the collector and increases in the series Mg/sup 2 +/, La/sup 3 +/ < Be/sup 2 +/, Al/sup 3/, Th/sup 4 +/ < Zr/sup 4 +/ < Fe/sup 3 +/ < Sn/sup 4 +/ < Ti/sup 4 +/ < Nb/sup 5 +/. The adsorption of cesium by titanium hydroxide is influenced by the presence in solution of extraneous uni-, di-, and polyvalent hydrolyzable cations, which reduce the adsorption of cesium in the following sequence, depending on the nature of the impurity: Li/sup +/ < Na/sup +/ < K/sup +/, NH/sub 4//sup +/ Tl/sup +/, Mg/sup 2 +/ < Ca/sup 2 +/ < Sr/sup 2 +/ < Ba/sup 2 +/, Zr/sup 4 +/ < Fe/sup 3 +/ < Th/sup 4 +/ < La/sup 3 +/. The proposed mechanism of adsorption of cesium as a chemical, acid--base interaction of the sorbent and sorbate, occurring according to the type of an ion-exchange heterogeneous reaction, was discussed. It was suggested that the degree of capture ofmore » one ion or another by metal hydroxides according to the mechanism of acid--base interaction depends both on the physicochemical properties of the collector and on the ''effective'' acidity or basicity of the partners under the given concrete conditions.« less
