SELECTION STRATEGY FOR AUGEMENTATION OF SEED YIELD IN MUNGBEAN (VIGNA RADIATA L. WILCZEK)

Abstract

Twenty Mungbean genotypes were evaluated to study the genetic variability, correlation and path analysis were studied. Analysis of genetic parameters exhibited high to moderate values for genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV), heritability (broad sense) (H) and genetic advance (GA) for plant height, pod number, cluster number and harvest index. Highest heritability has been observed for cluster number/branch (85%) followed by plant height (79%) and pod number/cluster (78%). While lowest for biological yield/plant (35.5%). Character association studies revealed significant and positive correlation of harvest index, pod number, 100-seed weight and pod length with seed yield. Path coefficient analysis revealed high positive direct effect of harvest index and biological yield onseed yield with considerable positive effect of maturity duration and plant height. Hence, selection for genotypes with higher harvest index and biological yield, taller height and longer duration could facilitate augmentation of seed yield in mungbean.
