Effect of fungicides on fusarium fruit rot of Banana

Abstract

Nine fungicides with two concentrations (500 and 1000 ppm) and mancozeb and chlorothalonil at 1000 and 2000 ppm along with control were assayed to study their effect on mycelial growth and development of Fusarium monilifonne in vitro and in vivo. Among all fungicides tested benomyl, carbendazim (12%) + mancozeb (63%), thiophanate methyl, carbendazim and propiconazole completely inhibited the mycelial growth at both the concentrations (500 and 1000 ppm). The next best treatment in order of merit were azoxystrobin 18.2% + difenoconazole 11.4% (90.73%) and hexaconazole (5%) + captan (70%) (89.96%) @ 1000 ppm concentrations. The severity of fusarium rot was significantly lowest in fruits treated with benomyl at 500 and 1000 ppm concentrations (5.82 and 4.16%) and (6.66 and 4.99%) followed by propiconazole (6.66 and 4.99%) and (7.49 and 5.82%) in pre and post-inoculation treatments respectively after 7 days of inoculation. Benomyl at 1000 ppm was found best for reducing the fusarium rot severity as compared to lower concentration (500 ppm) in pre-and post-inoculation. Carboxin (37.5%) + thiram (37.5%) was found least effective in reducing the rot at both concentrations in pre (29.16 and 28.32%) and postinoculation (30.00 and 26.66%) treatments.
