“SPEECH ACT IN THE GREAT GATSBY MOVIE SCRIPT”

Advisor: Dr. Nurul Chojimah M.pd. \nKeywords: Speech Act, Main Characters, The Great Gatsby, Movie script. \nSpeech act is the utterance which speaker said or speaker performs in every speech. This study investigates Speech Acts in The Great Gatsby movie script. The objectives of the study are to know the illocutionary act based on Searle category are used by the main characters that found in “The Great Gatsby” movie script and to find out the strategies are used to reliaze the illocutionary acts by the main characters in “The Great Gatsby” movie script. There are four types of illocutionary acts based on Seale category, they are: representative, directive, commissive, and expressive and the strategy of speech acts, there are direct and indirect speech acts. \nThe formulation of the research problems were: what are the illocutionary acts based on Searle category are used by the main characters in “The Great Gatsby” movie script and What strategies are used to realize the illocutionary acts by the main characters in “The Great Gatsby” movie script. \nThe main objective of this study were: to know the illocutionary act based on Searle category are used by the main characters that found in “The Great Gatsby” movie script and to find out the strategies are used to reliaze the illocutionary acts by the main characters in “ The Great Gatsby” movie script. \nResearch method of this study: the research design on this study was library research with qualitative approach. The data source of this study was the utterances from the main characters in movie from began until the end and it is become data of analysis. To analyze data the writer did some steps. They are: (i) downloading the movie script, (ii) watching the movie, (iii) reading and observing the dialogue from the script, (iv) collecting the data by watching the movie and trying to understand it in every utterances (v) analyze the illocutionary acts based on Searle category and strategy of speech acts. \nThe result showed that Nick Carraway, Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, Tom Buchanan, Jordan Baker, and Dr. Jack Thompson as the main characters in “The Great Gatsby” movie script used some types of illocutionary acts based on Searle category and strategy of speech acts. They are representatives, directives, commissives, and expressives. And the kinds of strategy of speech act, they are direct and indirect speech act. \n Based on the research question and discussion of the data presentation and analysis, the conclusion is describing deal with speech acts in The Great Gatsby movie script. The writer suggest for the further researcher that study of pragmatic especially in speech act is very interasting because we can learn about speaker’s meaning and speech act to make us comprehend what message that discovered in every utterance and also decided by the language ability of speaker to convey the message in communication.
