THE ANALYSIS OF ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS IN THE MOVIE SCRIPT OF “IRON MAN 3” BY SHANE BLACK

Language is an important device and a very beneficial tool for human being to communicate with other people. When people have a communication, there occurs utterances. Utterance means what is said by any one person before or after another person begins to speak. People perform action through that utterance. Action performed via utterances are usually called speech acts. In the study of English, students of English Education Department still have difficulties in understanding and comprehending some utterances. To understand what the word mean and what the speaker or hearer express is not easy, in this case is illocutuionary act. Utterance can be found in the dialogue of a movie. It is written in the form of movie script. In the dialogue of a movie there are complete forms of speech act and there will be illocutionary act The objectives of this research are as follows (i) To describe the illocutionary acts found in the movie script of “Iron Man 3” by Shane Black. (ii) To describe the speech acts’ classification of functions found in the movie script of “Iron Man 3” by Shane Black. The design of the research is descriptive qualitative. The data of this research are illocutionary acts expressed by the main characters. Meanwhile, the data source will be taken from the movie script of “Iron Man 3” by Shane Black which contain illocutionary acts. The result of this research (i) There are 19 types of illocutionary acts in which they are: stating, promising, admiring, asserting, declaring, questioning, giving compliment, requesting, apologizing, congratulating, welcoming, announcing, ordering, suggesting, like, showing pleasure, thanking, greeting, and concluding (ii) There are 114 utterances which contain the speech acts’ classification of function, they are: representatives (15); directives (54); commisives (30); declarations (3); and expressives (12). Based on the result of the research above, the teacher an use this research as a reference or example and give contribution in the teaching and learning process. For the students, especially the sudents of English Education Department who have studied illocutionary act, the research can be used as one of reference in studying speech act, its types and classification of functions. or further researchers who are interested in investigating illocutionary act, it can be a reference for conducting other related reserach
