Abstract
The complexing of Zr/sup 4+/ and Hf/sup 4+/ ions with nitrilotriacetic acid in highly acid medium was studied using ion exchange methods. It was found that 1: 1 ratio complexes form in 1 and 2 mole HClO/sub 4/ solution in the presence of H/sub 2/A. Constants for HfAl complexes (0.68 plus or minus 0.03) x 10/sup 4/ and (1.2 plus or minus 0.1) x 10/sup 4/ (2 mole HClO/sub 4/) and for ZrA/sup +/ (11.2 plus or minus 2.0 x 10/sup 4/ and (27.4 plus or minus 2.6) x 10/sup 4/ were found. It was also found that three hydrogen ions split away in the H/sub 3/A reaction with Zr/sup 4+/ and Hf/sup 4+/. (R.V.J.)
