Abstract

Federal Education Minister Brendan Nelson described the Liberal Party's support for voluntary student unionism (VSU) as a 'totemic issue' comparable to the National Party's commitment to drought relief. However his statement lends credence to the view that Costello, Abbott and other conservative former student leaders have succeeded in making VSU into an ideological obsession for the Liberal Party.
