Abstract

The election of a new Labor Government in late 2007, and its commitment to a new framework for collective bargaining and union rights, will greatly improve the prospects for fair and effective collective bargaining in higher education. In early February Deputy PM Julia Gillard announced the immediate abolition of the Coalition's pernicious Higher Education Workplace Relations Requirements (HEWRRs), and in late March legislated to abolish Australian Workplace Agreements (AWAs).
