Abstract
Operation of the sand bypass system at the mouth of the Tweed River (on the Queensland and New South Wales state border) has been ongoing since March 2001. In the early stages of operations the sand bypass system was required to deliver sand in excess of the net littoral drift rates. The extensive monitoring program for the project has provided invaluable data for examining the behaviour and response of beaches along the southern Gold Coast. Beaches along the southern Gold Coast are now wider, providing better amenity, a demonstrated storm buffer, and surfing benefits.
