The Role of Tutorial in Large-group Teaching

Two teaching-learning strategies have been identified. One is subject-centred teaching and the other is student-centred teaching. The role of tutorials in each of these method has been discussed. For subject-centred teaching, tutorial provides an opportunity for the student to discuss problems, seek opinion, promote understanding, and it addresses the individual needs of the students. Tutorial is a discussion session and for the success of it, each member must prepare himself and participate. Nature of the tutorial problems, composition of the group, and the size of the group affect the effectiveness of the tutorial sessions. Various ways of conducting tutorial sessions have been discussed and the one likely to produce maximum participation has been identified.
