Abstract
Joints are weak point in bridges for they are often the cause of corrosion and degradation of the bridges. To prolong the durability of bridges in many countries jointless bridges, i.e. integral bridges, are designed and built. The first integral bridges were built in 1930, but the real widespread use of integral bridges did not start until 1987. The fact that still there is no standard for design and construction of integral bridges, makes their design and construction difficult. Therefore, this paper presents and analyses some aspect regarding design and construction of integral bridges. It comments directions of some associations and authors, as well as Codes for their designing. The intent of the paper is to enhance the awareness among the engineering community to use integral abutment and jointless bridges wherever it is possible.
