Abstract
A field experiment was conducted to study the effect of nitrogen levels on growth and yield components on frenchbean varieties during kharif 2006-07 and 2007-08. Three levels (80, 120 and 180 kg/ha) of nitrogen were applied to ten genotypes. Highest response was recorded with high dose of N application for all the traits studied. It was observed that genotypes early in flowering recorded higher green pod yield under all three N application regimes. On the basis of pooled mean, genotype IVFB 1 recorded highest green pods per plot, number of pods per plant, pod diameter, number of green seeds per pod and green pod yield per plant in addition to earliest flowering. Genotype Arka Komal recorded highest number of branches per plant and pod length. IVFB 1 was found most suitable for cultivation with high nitrogen application (180 kg/ha) for higher green pod yield in hilly areas of Jammu region.
