Aviation Security in Airport Development

Abstract
Many existing airport facilities throughout the world date from a time before measures to prevent acts of unlawful interference with civil aviation had to be introduced. It may take up to ten years for a new airport terminal, for example, to be taken from it's original conception to being fully commissioned, and even assuming a change for the worse in terms of attacks on civil aviation during that period, the basic design that is being executed may be far from ideal from a security standpoint. Not only will the requirements of the regulator be difficult if not impossible to meet, but the efficiency of terminal operations will suffer, and the customers will be inconvenienced. It is essential, therefore, for the needs of security to be included in every aspect of planning, design and construction, whether new facilities are involved or major redevelopments are planned.
