Abstract

The value of an inbred line on its ability to produce superior hybrids in combination with other inbreds. Combining ability analysis helps in the evaluation of hybrids in terms of their genetic value and the selection of suitable parents for hybridization. The average performance of a genotype in a series of hybrid combinations is termed as general combining ability. Thus sca refers to the deviation of a particular cross from the gca. Rohini found to be good general combiner NDR-8501 x Mathura Rai was found to be good specific combiner for days to maturity, number of secondary branches, number of siliquae on main raceme and seed yield. Top ranking crosses selected on the basis of significant desirable sca effect involved high, medium and low general combiners.
