Abstract

Details of the discussions at the 2005 Review Conference of the Treaty of Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) are presented, and the key features of non-proliferation by non-nuclear weapon States (non-NWS), disarmament by nuclear weapon States (NWS) and the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes as proposed by the NPT are analysed. The efforts of New Zealand in ensuring the implementation of the NPT, while also addressing the non-compliance of NWS to the disarmament provision, are discussed.
