Chapter 2 The Achievement Motive: A Review of Theory and Assessment of n Achievement, Hope of Success, and Fear of Failure

Abstract This chapter discusses major theoretical and methodological landmarks concerning n Achievement, such as behavioral and psychological characteristics of achievement-motivated individuals, developmental considerations, motivational incentives, and assessment paradigms. The chapter also discusses the development of a content-coding measure of hope of success and fear of failure, as well as behavioral differences between these approaches and avoidant achievement orientations. The chapter concludes with some recommendations for further research that is needed in order to better understand hope of success, fear of failure, and n Achievement.
