Abstract
A highly tentative analysis suggests that volcanism contributed less than 42 x 1018 but more than 14 x 108 tons solid substance to the lithosphere and at least 7.2 x 1017 tons water to the hydrosphere during the entire geologic history of the Earth (4.5 x 109 years). Volcanic contributions to the atmosphere are believed to be “infinitesimally small,” since the bulk of volcanic gases has been converted into solids (carbon, sulfur, etc.) or into solutes. -- V.P.
