The influence of sentence complexity and working memory on relative clause ambiguity resolution

Abstract

The present study aims to investigate the influence of sentence complexity on the relative clause ambiguity resolution preferences of native English speakers through the manipulation of three factors: relative clause length, relative clause position, and relative pronoun extraction site. The results of an offline questionnaire probing relative clause attachment preferences found significant effects of relative clause length and position, suggesting that syntactic complexity is a factor that influences ambiguity resolution strategies within a language. In addition, the influence of individual working memory capacity on relative clause processing was also examined, with the results showing a significant negative correlation between working memory capacity and relative clause attachment preference
