Abstract
In the present study the cdt gene was detected, using PCR, in 16 out of 65 (24.6%) Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) strains of different serotypes, isolated from humans, food, cattle, and pigs. Most of the cdt-positive isolates had the cdt-V gene variant (13 strains). All these strains were of O157:NM serotype, possessed the stx2 Shiga toxin and eaeA intimin genes, and were isolated from humans with haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS). Only two STEC strains recovered from cattle with diarrhoea had the CDT toxin marker.
