Abstract
Two hundred eighteen Escherichia coli strains isolated from diarrheic pigs were analyzed for the prevalence of the cdt-III gene encoding cytolethal distending toxin III (CDTIII). The CDT-III primers used in the study flanked the fragment responsible for the production of the cdt-IIIA subunit sequence. The PCR system applied in the study also included the E. coli 16S rRNA gene detection, which was used as an internal control. The multiplex PCR (mPCR) developed showed that only 3 of the 218 (1.4 per cent) isolates harboured the gene for CDT-III toxin. Two of these strains had also the genetic marker for cytotoxin necrotizing factor 2 (CNF2). The results obtained indicate that in Poland CDT-III toxin is not a common virulence marker in E. coli strains isolated from pigs with diarrhea.
