Abstract

The effects of light and increasing and decreasing temperature upon the distribution of melanin in melanophores in isolated scales from Fundulus heteroclitus L. have been studied. Light had no effect. Increasingand decreasing temperatures caused aggregation which could be reversed. These results are discussed in relation to certain hypotheses concerning melanophore control and it is concluded that they favor the view that isolated melanophores may act as independent effectors.
