The response of melanophores in isolated scales of Fundulus heteroclitus to melanophore-stimulating hormone (MSH)

Abstract

Scales were removed from Fundulus heteroclitus and immersed in α- and β-MSH solutions. The degree of dispersion of the melanin in the melanophores in the scales was observed microscopically and recorded using the mean melanophore index (MMI). The observations indicate that neither α-MSH, β-MSH, nor a combination of these substances induces dispersion of the melanin granules in melanophores of isolated scales from this fish.
