Abstract

The aberrations in neuronal biochemistry caused by various endogenous mental neurochemical disorders (affective disorders and schizophrenia) and exogenous central nervous system drug modalities, be they therapeutic or abusive, are outlined. This article first describes the neurochemical background of this problem and second, briefly, the instrumental advances for measuring the neurochemical sequences, what neurochemical aberrations have previously been observed or should be possible to observe in neuropsychopharmacology, narcotic addiction, or alcoholism, and their implications for diagnosis and treatment, and lastly the formulation of a pharmacological-physiological systems analysis and control theory based on interactive neuronal feedback loops (the effects of endogenous neurochemical diseases and exogenous psychotropic and other CNS drugs on neurotransmitter synthesis, release, reuptake, and metabolism) for normal, abnormal, and catastrophic situations.
