Abstract

Summary: During the period of 1975 to 1976, 1368 stocks of Candida had been isolated from the material submitted to the mycological laboratory of the Kiel Clinic. The differentiation revealed 80,2% Candida albicans, 7,9% Candida tropicalis 5,2% Candida parapsilosis, and 3,0% Candida guilliermondii. The remaining Candida species were less than 1 percent. Earlier examinations made in the same geographical area showed a significant preponderance - with slightly lower percentages - of Candida albicans, followed by Candida tropicalis. For 20 years, these four Candida stocks, along with Candida parapsilosis and guilliermondii, have represented the largest Candida potential in the field of Dermatology, in Northern Germany. The prominent position of Candida albicans as a pathogenic agent was proven based on literature from West and Middle Germany, as well as from other European regions.
