Abstract

The average spectral envelope over several blows on an 18-in. French cymbal was determined. The sound was picked up through a 38-in. microphone and analyzed at 13-octave intervals on an Ivie Electronics IE-30A spectrum analyzer. The cymbal was mounted horizontally in an anechoic chamber. The microphone was placed one meter below the outer edge of the disk. Although each blow gave a slightly different spectrum, they all had the same general characteristics. The envelope rises at about 7 dB per octave, to a peak in the 630-Hz region. Another broad peak occurs in the 4-kHz band. From there the falloff is quite steady at 16 dB per octave. The level at 16 kHz is 33 dB below the maximum value.
