Abstract
Treatment of crowns of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Horoshirikomugi) with a low concentration of hydrogen peroxide (1 mM) in the presence of a specific inhibitor of catalase, 3-amino- 1,2,4-triazole, induced or stimulated the synthesis of twenty-five polypeptides. Of the twenty-five, two were found to be polypeptides that had previously been shown to be inducible by cold treatment. In addition to the twenty-five polypeptides, two other new polypeptides were induced upon treatment with higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide (5 mM and 10 mM) in the presence of AT. Conversely, the rates of synthesis of fourteen polypeptides were decreased by peroxide treatment. The observation that the synthesis of the same polypeptides is induced by low temperature and by treatment with hydrogen peroxide suggests the participation of active oxygen species in the changes in gene expression that occur during cold acclimation in winter wheat.
