The Local Economy and Local Economic Strategies

This paper outlines the changing urban and economic patterns of the UK, in order to pose questions of principle concerning local economic strategies. Proposals for local intervention usually assume that the local economy is a coherent entity which can be influenced by regeneration policies. In reality most local economies are so fragmented that this approach is inadequate. Strategies for local benefits should devote far more attention to local labour markets.
