Abstract

Many observers have attested the value of sulfadiazine in meningococcic infections.1A previous report from this hospital2on the treatment of meningitis with sulfadiazine included 24 patients with meningococcic meningitis. Since then we have continued to treat all patients admitted to the Gallinger Municipal Hospital with sulfadiazine3or, since March 1943, alternately with sulfamerazine and sulfadiazine. During this time there has been an increasing incidence of meningococcic infections in the District of Columbia as well as in the country as a whole. Through May 31, 1943 we had treated 118 patients with meningococcic meningitis (including the 24 cases already reported) and 3 patients with meningococcemia. The present report includes a summary of the results obtained with sulfadiazine and sulfamerazine together with an analysis of the factors which influenced recovery or death. We have also studied the severity of the disease as the epidemic progressed and have attempted
