Abstract

IN studying the therapeutic value of sulfonamides in pullorum disease of poultry, Severens, Roberts and Card (1945) found that out of seven sulfonamides, sulfadiazine and sulfamerazine were the most effective, judged by both mortality and rate of gain of the surviving chicks. Anderson (1946), Mullen (1946), Anderson, Jones, Cooper and Morgan (1947), Eveleth, Goldsby and Bolin (1947), and MacNamee (1947) reported that the use of sulfamerazine in drinking water or in mash was effective in reducing the mortality due to pullorum disease. Bottorff and Kiser (1947) found that sulfamethazine, sulfadiazine or sulfamerazine caused a reduction in mortality among chicks. Pomeroy, Fenstermacher and Roepke (1948) reported that sulfadiazine, sulfamerazine, sulfapyrazine, sulfaquinoxaline and sulfamethazine were effective in reducing the mortality from pullorum disease in chicks. Sulfadiazine, sulfapyrazine, sulfaguanidine and sulfamerazine had little or no value in poults. The potentiating action of sulfonamides on the Brucella antibody-complement system has been reported by Huddleson . . .
