Abstract
The development and application of coal-water slurry fuels is a key factor in the future outlook for coal utilization in America. Coal-water slurry fuel is one of the most exciting energy developments in recent years. This synthetic fuel has generated enormous interest from many diverse groups. Coal in a liquid form has properties which will allow it to be handled and burned in equipment designed for petroleum fuels. Further, it can be made available at a cost comparable to present fuel costs. Coal-water slurry fuels can accomplish this without incurring the high capital costs involved in the conversion of coals to synfuels or with the conversion of industrial plants to handle solid coal fuel. Within this simple concept, however, many technological approaches with varied applications have come forth. This field is reviewed and options for the utilization of coal-water slurry fuels in America's future are suggested.
