Abstract

Coal-water slurry fuels is one of the most exciting energy development in recent years. This synthetic fuel has generated enormous interest from many diverse groups. Coal in a liquid form has properties which will allow it to be handled and burned in equipment designed for petroleum fuels. Further, it can be made available at a cost comparable to present fuel costs. Coal-water slurry fuels can accomplish this without incurring the high capital costs involved in the conversion of coals to synfuels or with the conversion of industrial plants to handle solid coal fuel. Within this simple concept, however, many technological approaches with varied application have come forth. Our objective in this paper is to overview this field and suggest options for the utilization of coal-water slurry fuels in America's future.
