Abstract

Abstract The equations of internal ballistics are developed for a gun in which the propellant gases can escape by a vent, whose area can be, in the most general case, a function of time or travel. The most important special cases are treated in detail. The theory has been applied to the testing and design of recoilless guns, to the leakage past the projectile in smooth-bore mortars and to the calculation of the loss of performance as a gun wears.
