Abstract

A red tide in June 1971 off Hong Kong immediately followed the passing of a typhoon; the causative agent was Noctiluca scintillans. Previous occurrence of N. scintillans was during winter. The summer conditions were not suitable for N. scintillans, which disappeared in a few days, causing no apparent harm. Its presence in high density is explained by convergence associated with the high velocity winds of the typhoon.
