1971 USE AND BEEF POTENTIAL OF CALVES FROM ONTARIO DAIRY HERDS

Abstract

A mail survey of a sample (924) of Ontario dairy farmers was conducted to gather information on the use of dairy bull calves born on their farms. It was found that there are 201,700 dairy bull calves available for meat production in Ontario, based on the data obtained in this study. It was found that 89,800 of these calves were reared on the home farm for meat purposes, and 111,900 were sold as bob calves. It was also estimated that 115,700 crossbred dairy–beef calves were available for meat purposes. Overall, a total of 346,500 calves could be used for meat. This includes bull calves, extra heifer calves, and crossbred calves.
