Abstract We investigate the transition from a mono-scroll to a double-scroll attractor observed in the chaotic dynamics of an electronic oscillator. The description in terms of an attractor merging crisis turns out to be successful. The finding is supported by the topological structure of the attractor and the scaling behavior of the mean residence time.
