Summary This paper is divided into two main parts. In the first part there is a general discussion of modern algebra and its role in the pre‐college curriculum. The second part gives a general overview of the algebra component of the CSMP K‐12 program. †This paper is based almost entirely on a talk the author gave at the Third CSMP International Conference on the Teaching of Mathematics at the Pre‐College Level: Algebra,held in Carbondale, Illinois, U.S.A. in November 1970. ‡ CSMP = Comprehensive School Mathematics Program. CSMP, located in Carbondale, Illinois, U.S.A., is one of the program activities of CEMREL, St. Ann, Missouri, U.S.A.
