Abstract
The historical development of the mechanically driven 4-hammer long forging machine is described. Comparisons are made of the operation and economic performance of the 4-hammer machine with conventional forging equipment, such as the hammer and hydraulic press. The 2-hammer long forging machine and its use to forge construction steels are outlined. Continuous forging machines, their use to forge continuously cast steel billet, and their combination with rolling stands for the production of bar steel are then described.
