A group of 48 patients with essential mild to moderate hypertension were treated with the calcium-channel blocker diltiazem (90-270 mg/day) for one year. Adequate blood pressure control was achieved in all patients. No tolerance developed during the one-year treatment period. The drug is almost free from side effects. Very few patients develop fluid retention, which can be controlled by adding a diuretic.
