The Position of Polish Political Elites on Future EU Enlargement

Abstract

The Polish political elite favours further EU enlargement. They support to different degrees the European aspirations of individual countries. The priority is the EU enlargement eastwards and the strategic goal of the accession of Ukraine. It is argued that the Polish position on the prospects of the accession of that country to a large extent determines the attitude towards the whole process of EU enlargement. It is unlikely that this general support will change in the near future. However, it cannot be ruled out that the attitude of the Polish political elites towards the EU membership of individual states (especially Turkey and the Balkan countries) may be redefined.
