Abstract
Apolipoprotein (apo) (1) B plays a central role in lipoprotein metabolism. It is the only apolipoprotein in low density lipoproteins (LDL), the lipoproteins that transport two-thirds of the plasma cholesterol in humans. Elevated concentrations of LDL cholesterol are one of the major risk factors for the development of atherosclerosis. The possibility of lowering plasma LDL concentrations by limiting the production of very low density lipoproteins (VLDL), the precursor of LDL, has fueled interest in the biosynthesis of VLDL.
