Abstract

1785 The goal of this project was to compare venous blood lactate values measured by the Accusport portable lactate analyzer to readings made by the "gold standard" spectrophatometric (Spec) technique. Ten subjects (7 females, 3 males) donated 7-ml of venous blood for analysis. The blood samples were divided and augmented with exogenous lactate to produce six simulated exercise concentrations for each measurement technique. The first level contained no exogenous lactate (0-mmol/L) and the remaining 5 levels were "spiked" with 3, 6, 9, 12, and 15-mmol/L of exogenous lactate from Sigma Chemical Co. (St. Louis, MO). Each sample was measured in duplicate at each level by each technique. Individual paired t-tests were used to determine significant differences between techniques at each level of lactate augmentation. The reliability coefficient for duplicate readings on the Accusport was 0.99. Values from the Spec were significantly higher than Accusport at the +3, +6, and +15-mmol/L levels.(Table)TableThe correlation between venous blood lactate values measured on the Accusport and the Spec was 0.99. The mean difference between readings of the Accusport and the Spec across all levels was −0.7-mm/L. This meets the approval criteria as set forth by the FDA, i.e., ±0.75. Although, the Accusport may slightly underestimate true lactate readings, it is probably an acceptable tool for field test measurements of venous blood lactate.
