Blacks in Mathematics: A Status Report

The underparticipation and underachievement of black students in precollege mathematics courses are documenred, and some possible contributing factors are discussed. A review of the literature suggests that only recently have studies been undertaken to identify and explore specific causes and to attempt interventions. A major research program is called for that would explore the problem in depth, but increased efforts to alleviate the plight of black students regarding mathematics need not await the results of research.
