Abstract
Plant establishment in arid lands and seasonally dry site can be improved using hyperefficientirrigation systems. These will work where drip, sprinkler, furrow or basin irrigation cannot.Deep pipe and porous tube irrigation systems enabled plants to survive for three years in extremeconditions with a total of less than 10 liters of irrigation water. Wick irrigation also shows somepromise but needs additional development. Using the best of these systems trees could beestablished several kilometers from water sources even with only hand carried irrigation water.
