Progress in steelmaking technology for special steel in this decade has been reviewed in classification of melting, refining, continuous casting and special melting. Daido steel has developed several new steelmaking technologies such as VCR process for a new stainless steel refining process, multi-function CC with vertical 4 strands and round mold with introduction of soft-reduction and 2ST-2M operation for flexible casting with high quality and vacuum ESR process for super-clean stainless steel. Prospects in new technology desirable in special steel production are also described including half-size melting and refining technology for small lot production and DSM process as a new dust treatment technology in environmental aspect.
