Recent troubles with harmonic voltages have rendered a simple electrical harmonic analyser necessary. The following notes outline the available methods of measuring harmonic values, compare their merits and indicate their weaknesses. A form of analyser using a synchronous disk is described and its errors deduced. An improved form of this analyser is developed which can be used with an ordinary moving-coil voltmeter; its errors are calculated and means are given for correcting these errors on fundamental and 3rd harmonics. Mathematical appendices give analyses of the early and later forms of analyser and calculate the errors obtained on typical wave forms.
