Determination of Yield and Yield Components and Relationship among the Components of Grain Sorghum Cultivars Grown as Main Crop

Abstract

Field experiments were conducted in Dyarbakir, Turkey, during the 1998 and 1999 cropping seasons, to study the yield, yield components and their relationships in different grain sorghum cultivars to determine the most suitable cultivars in the southeastern Anatolia region of Turkey. A total of 24 grain sorghum cultivars were studied. The grain yields of the different cultivars varied between 3589.9-9634.8 kg/ha. In all the observed characters, statistically significant differences were determined among cultivars. The positive and significant relationships were determined between the grain yield and grain yield per panicle, panicle length and plant height. However, negative and significant relationships were determined between the crude protein percentage and grain yield, panicle length and 1000-seed weight. As a result, DK 64 and KS 989 were determined as high yielding cultivars under the southeastern Anatolia region conditions as main season crops
